This Fathers’ Day, we’re celebrating the important role that men can play in supporting the women in their lives, and be positive role models for a more equal future

Supporting women and girls is a cause that everyone can engaged with. In order to bring greater visibility to the issues faced by millions of women around the world, from the risks of dying during childbirth to lack of access to safe accommodation, we want to keep involving men in the conversation.

On Fathers’ Day we take a moment to think about the role that men can play in supporting mothers, daughters, sisters, female co-workers and other women in their life. Like the strong women in their lives, these men can make a positive difference supporting women to speak up, be brave and to have their issues heard.

We took to the streets to collect stories and images of amazing fathers who want to create a better world for their daughters.

We imagine a world where our daughters can give birth safely without fear. Where they can access education, be free from abuse and assault and live without discrimination.

Fathers play an important role supporting mothers throughout their pregnancies, during birth, and in raising strong, healthy children.

In Sierra Leone mothers face one of the highest lifetime risks of maternal death in the world, with 1 in 17 likely to die during pregnancy or childbirth. Millions of women and children die annually from preventable health-related conditions, a situation further compounded by the spread of the Ebola virus.

Fathers everywhere: will you take a stand against the tremendous adversities facing women in our world?

A big thank you to the families that participated in this photo series, and for sharing your dedication to a better future for women and girls everywhere.

What we're doing

Our vision is that every woman in Sierra Leone has as much chance for her and her baby to survive as any woman in a developed country. Get involved!

How YOU can get involved:

Take a photo with your dad or other significant man in your life, and share it with us @aminatafoundation!

Dads, uncles, grandfathers, stepfathers, cousins and brothers: What kind of world do you hope to see in the future for the women in your life?

Take a photo together and send it to us!

Share it on social media with the hashtag #dadsfordaughters

No matter how you choose to show your support, you will be creating positive change in the world.

Happy Fathers’ Day!

A special thank you to our volunteers, Stephanie Newman and Sebastian Reategui, who kindly gave their time in developing this campaign.

Last year we shared with you a story about Aminata, who is the House Manager of the Aberdeen Women's Centre Hostel Girls programme. Today, the International Day of Education, we would like to introduce her pupil, another talented Aminata who graduated from the Dream Girls Programme.

Read her story and leave her a message in the comments. 🤗

Aminata is a 2018 alum of Aberdeen Women’s Centre (AWC)’s Hostel Girls Programme, which trains vulnerable young mothers in hospitality and provides health education, literacy, and numeracy classes. In addition to these classes every Hostel Girl receives psychosocial counselling and support.

Aminata was such an impressive and dedicated student that after graduating from the programme AWC asked her to join it’s Domestics department. Today, Aminata is a vital member of the domestics department and a beloved member of the AWC family.

Before Aminata joined the Hostel Girls Programme her mother passed away. She went to live with her Aunty who agreed to help her raise money for her schooling by selling water. Every day Aminata and her Aunt sold water on the streets of Freetown, so that she might be able to attend school.

While selling water she met a man and later became pregnant with his child. The man denied that he was the father and abandoned Aminata and her baby.

“Meeting the right helpers changes someone’s life for good. I feel proud to be a model for
other young girls. God constantly reward AWC.”

A better world is possible. Together we can do it.

In 2020 Sierra Leone overturned a ban prohibiting pregnant girls from attending school. However, teens are not encouraged to study when they are expecting.

According to the 2019 census, at the age of 19, nearly half of Sierra Leonean girls have started having babies. That means that almost half of them are deprived of education.

The "Dream Team Program" aims to transform their lives through income-generating skills and empowerment at the most vulnerable moment in their lives, both economically and emotionally, through rebuilding their self-esteem and confidence.

*In order to comply with the government COVID restrictions the Dream Team Program is currently suspended.

About one year ago @freedomfromfistula welcomed Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex to the Aberdeen Women’s Centre (AWC) in Sierra Leone.

During her visit she learned about the AWC programs that treat children with severe injuries caused by rape and FGM, including paralysis and incontinence. HRH's visit was essential to help raise awareness of the importance to expand the services to support child victims of rape.

Having a baby can cause a huge impact in a women’s life, especially in young women's lives.

The @AminataFoundation came about following the birth of @AminataConteh-Biger 's two beautiful children. She envisioned women in Sierra Leone to be able to access their basic human rights.

That’s why we work tirelessly to help as many women as possible to deliver their babies with dignity and safety.

With your incredible support we not only made it through 2020, but our community grew bigger and stronger than ever. Thank you!

Please keep supporting us, motherhood should mark a beginning, not an end.
