This Fathers’ Day, we’re celebrating the important role that men can play in supporting the women in their lives, and be positive role models for a more equal future

Supporting women and girls is a cause that everyone can engaged with. In order to bring greater visibility to the issues faced by millions of women around the world, from the risks of dying during childbirth to lack of access to safe accommodation, we want to keep involving men in the conversation.

On Fathers’ Day we take a moment to think about the role that men can play in supporting mothers, daughters, sisters, female co-workers and other women in their life. Like the strong women in their lives, these men can make a positive difference supporting women to speak up, be brave and to have their issues heard.

We took to the streets to collect stories and images of amazing fathers who want to create a better world for their daughters.

We imagine a world where our daughters can give birth safely without fear. Where they can access education, be free from abuse and assault and live without discrimination.

Fathers play an important role supporting mothers throughout their pregnancies, during birth, and in raising strong, healthy children.

In Sierra Leone mothers face one of the highest lifetime risks of maternal death in the world, with 1 in 17 likely to die during pregnancy or childbirth. Millions of women and children die annually from preventable health-related conditions, a situation further compounded by the spread of the Ebola virus.

Fathers everywhere: will you take a stand against the tremendous adversities facing women in our world?

A big thank you to the families that participated in this photo series, and for sharing your dedication to a better future for women and girls everywhere.

What we're doing

Our vision is that every woman in Sierra Leone has as much chance for her and her baby to survive as any woman in a developed country. Get involved!

How YOU can get involved:

Take a photo with your dad or other significant man in your life, and share it with us @aminatafoundation!

Dads, uncles, grandfathers, stepfathers, cousins and brothers: What kind of world do you hope to see in the future for the women in your life?

Take a photo together and send it to us!

Share it on social media with the hashtag #dadsfordaughters

No matter how you choose to show your support, you will be creating positive change in the world.

Happy Fathers’ Day!

A special thank you to our volunteers, Stephanie Newman and Sebastian Reategui, who kindly gave their time in developing this campaign.

I have just signed up for the #AMFWalkingChallenge2020 from 1st November to 14th November inspired by this incredible woman @aminata_conteh_biger, the CEO of the @aminatafoundation, and also my own birth story.

Six weeks after my second baby Lottie was born prematurely, I experienced a late post-partum haemorrhage and was rushed to hospital. I was there for a week, and in that time, the bleeding wouldn’t stop. I was given five blood transfusions and eventually, underwent a curette to remove the retained placenta. It was the scariest thing I've ever gone through and I'll never forget it.

If I was in Sierra Leone, I wouldn’t have survived. I wouldn’t have had the medical care I did.

We met Jakia in the alleyways of Kroo Bay, widely regarded as the most disadvantaged postcode in the world. She was 5 months pregnant with her third child. Her first child was washed away in a flood. Her second baby died at birth, as the nurse tried to push her baby out by pressing vigorously. Jakia hadn’t been able to get to a safe hospital. She was in labour and couldn’t walk the 6.4 kilometres to get there.

A midwife arranged for Jakia to deliver her third baby in the safest maternity hospital in Sierra Leone - our very own partner at the Aberdeen Women’s Centre! 4 months later Jakia had a healthy baby girl.
