This Fathers’ Day, we’re celebrating the important role that men can play in supporting the women in their lives, and be positive role models for a more equal future

Supporting women and girls is a cause that everyone can engaged with. In order to bring greater visibility to the issues faced by millions of women around the world, from the risks of dying during childbirth to lack of access to safe accommodation, we want to keep involving men in the conversation.

On Fathers’ Day we take a moment to think about the role that men can play in supporting mothers, daughters, sisters, female co-workers and other women in their life. Like the strong women in their lives, these men can make a positive difference supporting women to speak up, be brave and to have their issues heard.

We took to the streets to collect stories and images of amazing fathers who want to create a better world for their daughters.

We imagine a world where our daughters can give birth safely without fear. Where they can access education, be free from abuse and assault and live without discrimination.

Fathers play an important role supporting mothers throughout their pregnancies, during birth, and in raising strong, healthy children.

In Sierra Leone mothers face one of the highest lifetime risks of maternal death in the world, with 1 in 17 likely to die during pregnancy or childbirth. Millions of women and children die annually from preventable health-related conditions, a situation further compounded by the spread of the Ebola virus.

Fathers everywhere: will you take a stand against the tremendous adversities facing women in our world?

A big thank you to the families that participated in this photo series, and for sharing your dedication to a better future for women and girls everywhere.

What we're doing

Our vision is that every woman in Sierra Leone has as much chance for her and her baby to survive as any woman in a developed country. Get involved!

How YOU can get involved:

Take a photo with your dad or other significant man in your life, and share it with us @aminatafoundation!

Dads, uncles, grandfathers, stepfathers, cousins and brothers: What kind of world do you hope to see in the future for the women in your life?

Take a photo together and send it to us!

Share it on social media with the hashtag #dadsfordaughters

No matter how you choose to show your support, you will be creating positive change in the world.

Happy Fathers’ Day!

A special thank you to our volunteers, Stephanie Newman and Sebastian Reategui, who kindly gave their time in developing this campaign.

This is Alice’s hospital bag. Alice is a 30 year-old single mother living in poverty in Freetown. She came to the Aberdeen Women’s Centre to give birth. When she arrived she found out that she was expecting twins which made her labour more far more dangerous and complicated. Thankfully, Alice was able to safely deliver her two beautiful twins. However, we want to draw your attention to Alice’s hospital bag. She simply arrived with a plastic bag. Inside the bag was a single blanket, a plate and a shirt.
In Sierra Leone, 1 in 8 mother’s die from child birth. In Australia, this figure is 1 in 8700. This devastating statistic highlights the reality for so many mother’s and babies in Sierra Leone. With your help, we can start to put an end to infant mortality in Sierra Leone. Motherhood should mark a beginning, not an end.

@Aminata_conteh_biger of the @aminatafoundation

Aminata is an author, activist, speaker, performer, and former refugee turned Founder & CEO of the Aminata Maternal Foundation.

And on 29 April 2021, at the Women’s Agenda Leadership Awards, she was awarded Agenda Setter of the Year Award, for her work establishing the Aminata Maternal Foundation, saving the lives of hundreds of mothers and babies in her home country, Sierra Leone. The judges noted her “ethos and integrity, and how she personifies joy.” They spoke about her going out by herself from Australia, harnessing a deeply traumatic past for the “benefit of wider society and to make the lives of women in her home country safer.”
