Donors’ Impact: Empowering Teenage Mothers through Dream Girls Program

Supported by the Aminata Maternal Foundation, the Dream Girls Program provides care and skills training to empower young mothers in Sierra Leone.

Since 2016, the Aminata Maternal Foundation has supported this initiative, which empowers teenage mothers with emotional, educational, and practical support, helping them navigate early motherhood and gain employment skills.

For girls like Isha Sesay, the program has been transformative. “After becoming pregnant as a teenager and being disowned by my family, the Aberdeen Women’s Centre provided free care and skills training. I learned hairdressing, catering, and tailoring, which helped me rebuild my life,” she shares. The program not only offers medical care but also creates a supportive community, crucial for improving health outcomes and fostering independence among participants.

AWC’s holistic approach combines healthcare with public health initiatives, supporting teenage mothers and promoting gender equality. Matron Jeneba Bockaria hopes to see more women in leadership roles in Sierra Leone, and the Dream Girls Programme is a step towards that vision. “Aberdeen Women’s Centre is a great investment in Sierra Leone,” says Dr. Isata Tchilo Golfa, highlighting the centre’s significant impact on improving maternal and child health and empowering women for a better future.
