Why It Matters
Sierra Leone’s healthcare system continues to face immense challenges, still recovering from civil war, Ebola, COVID-19, and the withdrawal of key international support like USAID. Tragically, a baby dies every two minutes in the country during the first days after birth. In rural areas, pregnant women often walk nearly 10 kilometers to reach the nearest hospital. Everyone walks at the First Breath Walk so they don’t have to.
Walking for Babies' First Breath
Supporters of the Aminata Maternal Foundation came together for this year’s First Breath Walk, raising over $20,000 to secure the first breaths of 60 babies in Sierra Leone. Over 50 fundraisers and walkers contributed, whether by taking on the 13km walk from Sydney Opera House to Watsons Bay or supporting the event from afar.
Corporate partners such as Active International Australia, Q5, Msquared Capital, and HSBC, also joined forces with the Aminata Maternal Foundation at the First Breath Walk 2025, raising funds and awareness for maternal and newborn health in Sierra Leone. The walk was further enriched by the participation of incredible organisations such as Amplify Black Women and African Professionals of Australia, whose support amplified the event’s impact.
The event brought together teams from each organisation to support safe childbirth. Participants shared stories, laughter, and a sense of purpose, highlighting the power of collaboration in making a real difference. Funds raised at the walk will go directly toward programs that provide essential services, safe deliveries, and life-saving support for mothers and newborns in Sierra Leone.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who supported the First Breath Walk 2025, whether by walking, donating, or spreading the word. Your commitment helps give every baby a safe start to life, and every step taken brings hope and health to mothers and newborns in Sierra Leone.
