Midwife training: the hands that save lives
Today, for over 7.8 million people, there are only 1,000 midwives, just one-third of what the country needs. This is the difference between life and death.
The reality we refuse to accept
When there is no trained midwife present, complications become tragedies. The reality we refuse to accept is that too many mothers face childbirth without skilled care. Too many lives are lost, not from lack of knowledge, but lack of access.

For the 10 years we have partnered with the Aberdeen Women’s Centre, we ensure that midwives are given hands on training to save lives, beyond the classroom. Real experience. Real births. Real lives saved.
Every student midwife in our program receives:
- A full 6 months of hands-on clinical placement
- Supervision by experienced, senior midwives
- Training in emergency response and critical stages of labour
- Exposure to real-life, high-risk maternal cases
We are training midwives and building a sustainable healthcare system

- 15 student midwives trained from across Sierra Leone
- 4 new midwives supported and posted by the government
- 6,000+ hours of hands-on training for students
- 8,000+ hours of advanced training for practising midwives
World-class expertise, local transformation
Our midwifery team has been strengthened through specialised training led by Jude Holden, an internationally respected midwife and former Country Director of the Aberdeen Women’s Centre.
Through on-the-ground mentorship in 2023 and 2024, Jude helped:
- Refine clinical standards
- Strengthen emergency care response
- Build confidence across midwives and doctors
