Today, 22% of pregnancies are among teenagers, a reality deeply rooted in the lasting impacts of over 12 years of Civil War, the Ebola Crisis, and COVID-19. The country’s health system is under considerable strain.
But behind every statistic is a girl with a name, a story, and a future still waiting to be written.
A movement born from urgency
For over a decade, the Aminata Maternal Foundation has stood at the frontlines, supporting more than 2,700 teenage mothers aged 11 to 17.
What began as an urgent response has become something far greater:
Rising Girls is now the only holistic education and empowerment program of its kind in Sierra Leone.
Rising Girls focuses on restoring dignity, rebuilding identity and redefining possibilities.
Rising Girls gives a second chance at life
At the most vulnerable moment in a girl’s life, Rising Girls steps in to provide:
Safe, midwife-led
childbirth
Access to education and
learning pathways
Nutritious food and essential care
Transportation support, ensuring girls can safely travel to and from the Aberdeen Women’s Centre.
Postnatal reintegration into their communities because survival is not enough. She deserves the chance to rise.
During our Rising Girls experience two times a week, girls step into a safe, nurturing environment where transformation begins.
They learn. They heal. They rebuild.
At the most vulnerable moment in a girl’s life, Rising Girls steps in to provide:
Education and literacy
Reading, writing, numeracy, and foundational learning, restoring confidence and opening doors.
Skills for independence
Soap-making, tailoring, crafts, weaving, creating pathways to earning an income and self-reliance.
Health and life education
Knowledge that protects not only their future, but their children’s future.
Counselling and emotional healing support for:
Anxiety, depression, trauma, family, and community reintegration.
